SOUSSE

Sousse is on Tunisia’s east coast, on the Gulf of Hammamet. The old town is still almost completely surrounded by its wall and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988.
The Ribat
The Ribat is a fortified complex from around the year 800. The men who lived here were soldiers and scholars at once, and they kept watch over the coast.
A narrow staircase takes you up the round watchtower. From the top you can see across the rooftops of the medina to the harbour.
The Great Mosque
Right next door is the Great Mosque, built in the mid 9th century. With its thick walls and round corner towers it looks more like a fortress from the outside.
The Kasbah
The Kasbah stands at the highest point of the medina. Today it houses the Archaeological Museum, with a large collection of Roman mosaics from the region.
